| Long before stepping onto the Broadway stage at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre to play a young Rubén González in Buena Vista Social Club, Jesús Pupo was refining a sound built on discipline and deep tradition. A graduate of Havana’s prestigious Amadeo Roldán Conservatory, Pupo was labeled “The Fastest Hands in Cuba,” yet his playing is defined less by technical speed and more by expressive economy—a technique that values the weight of sound, harmonic clarity, and saying only what is necessary. Rather than overwhelming the music with notes, Pupo uses the piano to build space, organizing a natural dialogue between Cuban heritage, jazz, and modern production. That philosophy is the driving force behind his upcoming 2026 album, Bibijagua. Named after a native Cuban ant known for carrying several times its own weight through quiet, daily effort, the project serves as a tribute to enduring, unwitnessed labor and authentic cultural roots. Recorded at Criteria Studios by engineer Dave Poler, the album puts substance over flash, bringing Pupo’s core trio together with guest collaborators like Richard Bona, Francisco Céspedes, and Danay Suárez. The lead single, “Casita Nengón,” offers the first taste of this vision. On the track, Danay Suárez seamlessly moves between melodic vocals and sharp, soulful rap verses, anchored by Pupo’s grounded, dramatic piano work. Backed by a rhythm section featuring Lino Piquero on upright bass, Roberto Vizcaíno Jr. on percussion, and Ludwig Afonso on drums, “Casita Nengón” bridges rural Cuban roots with modern creative freedom, proving that true mastery lies in honoring where you come from while saying something new. |
