Masters Of Our Roots is a vibrant blend of tradition and originality. The duo reimagines timeless Cuban standards such as “La Negra Tomasa” (also known as “Bilongo”) and “Drume Negrita,” while also presenting bold new compositions. Tracks like “Carnaval” and “Piano Bien Tocao’” showcase Albita’s songwriting mastery, and “Caridad,” a moving tribute to Cuba’s patron saint, was co-created at Chucho’s request after he asked Albita to add lyrics to his instrumental piece. The idea for the project originated from a phone call Albita received from Chucho years ago, inviting her to tour with his jazz quartet. The musical chemistry was instant, and some of those live arrangements evolved into the recordings on Masters Of Our Roots. Despite their busy schedules—Chucho at 83 is still touring internationally—the two reunited in Miami at InnerCat Studios, where they recorded the album’s backing tracks in just one day. The result is an album that feels as spontaneous as it is masterful. For Albita, this record is one of the most meaningful of her career. “The presence of Chucho takes this project into another dimension,” she says. For Chucho, Albita represents a symbol of Cuban music.
