Original Song from Reflexión Album Re-Visited by
Peru’s Deep Groove Masters

Los Angeles, CA (August 21, 2023) – Peru meets Ecuador via New York City in a deep-grooved, beat-laden remix of La Voz– an original song by NYC-based guitar virtuoso and singer Eljuri — by the Lima-based dance music collective Novalima. Coming out August 21st on Six Degrees Records, the song could not be more timely or topical than in this critical American election year. Cecilia Villar Eljuri, raised in New York but born in Ecuador to Spanish and Lebanese immigrant parents, has consistently used her platform as a performing artist — or “artivist” as she calls herself — in efforts to enlist civic engagement among Latinx and other marginalized communities. This year’s Eljuri Concerts for Democracy tour has taken her hands-on activism around the U.S. in partnership with the national voter registration campaigns of Headcount, Every Vote Counts, and Spread the Vote, successfully registering scores of citizens both young and old to use their voices toward justice and social change. “In my song La Voz I strove to unearth our inner voice of consciousness and the need for us to extend a hand of compassion to others. Though challenging, the unity it fosters holds unparalleled power. I want to bring hope in a climate of despair, light in the darkness,” says Eljuri. “At a time when there is so much division in the United States, I believe music provides us with bridges that can bring us all back together.” Eljuri has been writing songs like this for a long time. As a born storyteller, she aims to empower the Latinx community and their allies through her music. Her life experience has taught her that representation and leadership really do make a difference, and that there is power and validation in knowing that we are not alone in what we suffer. She continues, “It’s a unifying song, saying ‘Listen to your conscious voice and be kind to your neighbors.’ It’s corny, but it matters. People feel that; it’s global. I feel that time is fleeting and our individual and collective actions really matter — especially now.” |
