Los Angeles, CA. (July 25, 2025) — Following her Gen Z remake of Shakira’s hit “Tortura,” the Chicana Chicago-based artist Mila La Morena unveiled “broken,” a bilingual shoegaze and electronic-inspired track about teenage heartbreak. “broken”is part of her upcoming album Post Internet, due in October.
Inspired by artists like Saramalacara, Ayleen Valentine, and Yeule, “broken” blends shoegaze and electronic textures to create a sound that feels both grunge and empowering—as Mila La Morena puts it: “yes, I’m emo… but I’m still going to dance and find joy.” The song looks back on a relationship marked by toxicity, exploring that dangerous idea that love should hurt—and the painful realization that sometimes we’re drawn to what wounds us most.
While the lyrics capture that mix of tenderness and hurt, the music video, filmed in Mexico City with her creative team Keio and Niño Rosas, visualizes the aftermath: two contrasting characters—a kawaii figure and a gothic one—symbolizing souls trying to connect despite their differences. Mila La Morena chose not to star in the video herself, allowing the story to focus on the complex space where affection and sorrow coexist. The music video was filmed in an intricately designed Mexican tomb, which adds another layer of symbolism: a tribute to the death of love and perhaps the beginning of artistic rebirth.
Mila La Morena is a queer, Chicana artist whose project fuses R&B, reggaetón, pop, and electronic music into a sound that feels at once nostalgic and defiantly fresh. Singing in a perfect blend of English and Spanish, the Gen Z artist explores themes of love, power, and vulnerability through a lens shaped by her identity and lived experiences between the U.S. and Mexico City. Beyond her work as a composer and singer, Mila La Morena is a well-known cultural organizer who produces independent and DIY shows in Chicago, IL. She has also been a part of important festivals, including Ruido Fest, Tomorrow Never Knows Festival, and Villapalooza, throughout her blossoming career. She has also made notable contributions through sync placements in films and TV series. One highlight is her song featured in Amarres, the first original series produced by HBO for Latin America.
Up next, Mila La Morena is scheduled to release two more singles before Post Internet drops, each offering a new facet of her sonic and emotional world.
